In October 2016, D2E’s Bill Evans, Robin Cheeseright, Paul Burns and Liam Shepherd attended the CTBUH 2016 conference, Cities to Megacities, in China and Hong Kong.
The week-long conference took them from Shenzhen to Guangzhou and finally ending in Hong Kong, where sadly the conference was cut short by a typhoon causing a city wide lock down.
On the first two days of the conference, D2E were proud to present two papers. On the first day, Paul Burns presented during the Improving Vertical Transportation session. His presentation covered his paper “Improving Vertical Transportation Design for a Dense Vertical Urban Environment” looking at the gap between the expectation and perception between key stakeholders of high rise buildings as to the roles and capabilities of VT supporting high rise living in a world with increasing urban populations. Within the presentation (and paper), Paul explores and compares those expectations and perceptions gathered through surveys and direct interviews carried out by D2E and our own VT design experience, gathered data and previous studies, with the aim of defining and bridging the divisions that currently exist.

On the second day, Liam Shepherd presented “Key Considerations for Cleaning and Maintenance Strategies in Dense Vertical Urban Environments” during the Façade Maintenance session. The object of Liam’s presentation was to raise awareness about the importance of façade access design and how to develop an effective access and maintenance (A&M) strategy. The presentation looks at methods of best practice and addresses how the risk of a poor A&M strategy can be avoided. By considering A&M at the early design stages of a project, a pragmatic and coordinated approach can be taken to ensure that key system requirements are identified and building interfaces are factored in to the building design to avoid implications at a later date.

When not presenting, D2E’s delegates grew their knowledge at the various presentation sessions throughout the day, attended off site visits to prestigious buildings, and the daily networking events. On the day before the conference, Robin Cheeseright, chaired the first meeting of CTBUH’s Vertical Transportation working group.
D2E thoroughly enjoyed their time presenting, learning and meeting other delegates and look forward to attending the next CTBUH conference in 2017.
