MC² is a mixed development located in the heart of The Masdar City Development in Abu Dhabi. The development is split across three different plots (G10, G11, and G12). The development will comprise primarily of single-tenant and multi-tenant office spaces with additional space allocation for retail stores and parking facilities.
D2E were appointed by AESG to provide vertical transportation (VT) design services from RIBA Stage 01 to Stage 05.
D2E’s appointment helped provide the project with a practical and feasible vertical transportation design. The vertical transportation design advised was done by taking into account the project's mixed-use scheme and end goal expectation of the client. As such, codes and standards practiced in the United Arab Emirates were taken into consideration when providing guidance, along with the strategic placement of the lifts within each building.
The outcome from the project proved to be a valuable lesson is understanding and learning the differences between the vertical transportation code of practice followed across the British Isles and the Middle East. This includes the type of client expectations on the vertical transportation design set across the two regions.
