Project

The HYLO project, reimagined by HCL Architects, transformed a 1960s building originally designed by Richard Seifert. Thirteen additional floors were added, bringing the total to 28 stories, creating new workspaces, retail areas, as well as affordable housing.
To ensure compatibility with the residential surroundings and the nearby Barbican Centre, HCL opted to retain brick panels instead of using extensive glazing in the new addition. The project achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating, highlighting its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Challenge

HYLO is the first building in London to implement KONE’s advanced Destination Control System (DCS), a cutting-edge technology that optimises traffic flow using advanced dispatching and double-decker lifts. This innovative system enhances efficiency and provides seamless access to all floors.
