Project
40 Leadenhall Street boasts 900,000ft2 / 83,600m2 of predominantly office space over 36 floors. The building also includes 17 outdoor gardens and terraces, a library, 22,500ft2 / 2,090m2 of grooming, treatment and commuter facilities, a 200-seat auditorium, a communal clubhouse at level 11, and two public restaurants on levels 13 and 14. The building’s stepped profile is designed to not obstruct views of St Paul’s Cathedral. This creates a composition of rectilinear planes with historical inspiration akin to the early 20th century skyscrapers of the United States of America.
Challenge
The vertical transportation scheme needed to support more than 8,000 people over two towers. The North Tower includes 13 x 2000kg double deck lifts split into a low-rise and a high-rise core, and the South Tower has 6 x 2000kg single deck lifts serving all levels up to level 12.
The scheme also includes a dedicated core to support public restaurants access through a dedicated entrance off Billiter Street.
Lastly, a basement loading bay is accessed via 3 x 26,000kg hydraulic vehicle lifts.
